Neighbourhood 1 and Neighbourhood 2 (2008) and Untitled (2011) are three
unique paintings that showcase Layla Juma’s colour blocking approach.
Inspired by the making of cities, Layla breaks dimensionality of structures into
outlined irregular geometric shapes filled with individual colours. The artist
simultaneously depicts life using the same technique. Layla’s imaginative
colour schemes aim to focus on the beauty of the local environment, negating
neutral palettes associated with the desert. She celebrates local diversity, like
in Trees (2011), where the sky is pink, explaining there is more than what
people think.
