In Untitled 101 (1988), the artist constructs a scene based on a combination of visual elements, however each in its raw state. The boldly outlined nude figure shies from the viewer, revealing no facial expression, but instead relies on body language. The artist takes the idea further, presenting a framed faceless portrait next to the figure. Deprived of features, the portrait cannot emote, but appears linked to the figure through its detached body parts. The artist then finds balance by inserting visual elements in the form of recognizable animals, namely the bird and cat on the top left and bottom right corners of the painting respectively. While the animals are associated with Al Mazrouei’s childhood and have several symbolic meanings across cultures, the artist separates them from any context, inviting viewers to experience them in the work, not as animals that we know, but as visual elements necessary to the composition of the work.
