A Dubai-based artist of Palestinian descent, Samar Hejazi is inspired by the famed embroidery, known as Tatreez, of her native homeland. She creates small and dainty pieces, sometimes framed or hanging, that reference geometrical shapes found in tatreez. But there's more to it than pure aesthetics. According to her artist statement, she "uses her art to question conceptual ideas of self-identification, social construction, culture, ancestry and home. The artworks create a space for exploration. They are a method of engaging, processing and understanding differences. They are an expression of liberation from normalised styles of thinking.”
